CAPE TOWN PRACTICE –overview

The Cape Practice was established in 2002 by Dr John McVeigh and the vets of the Summerveld group as a sister practice in Cape Town.

This was gradually spearheaded by Dr Antony Clements( English) from 2003 till he left to start the UK branch in 2006.

Dr Alasdair Cameron (Scottish) then took over the managerial role overseeing the purchase and refurbishing of the old CAPE VET HOSPITAL, which re –emerged as a full Equine surgical facility called Baker & McVeigh Equine Hospital (CAPE BRANCH) .

The Cape branch was then greatly strengthened by the amalgamation  and partnership with well-known “Cape Horse Vet”, Dr Dave Timpson (South African) in 2008.

Dr`s McVeigh, Cameron Timpson and Clements are partners of the Cape Branch.

Dr Barbara Gillespie, Dr Manfred Hanni, Dr Andre Hanekom & Dr Garth Nieuwenhuis complete the veterinary team. In the busy summer months vets from our European branches conduct sabbaticals in our Cape Hospital .

We offer a fully equipped, accredited Equine hospital and an extensive ambulatory service to racehorses, sport horses, polo ponies and the pleasure horse community in Cape Town and the Western Cape.

We now have a riding arena so we can assess  horses under saddle and perform full prepurchase examinations at the hospital.

As a group, we provide sales vets at horse auctions throughout South Africa (TBA and Equimark), Goffs in Ireland, Tattersalls and Doncaster in England, Inglis in Australia, Keeneland USA and Arcana Deauville and St Cloud, France.

We also vet Thoroughbred yearlings annually in Argentina, Brazil, Italy Germany, and Chile.
